A series of brief, amazing moments, each one making possible the next

Letterpress on archival paper, series of 14

5” x 7”

2014

A series of brief, amazing moments, each one making possible the next is a package of letterpress cards wrapped in printed tissue paper, and gifted to peers who share my feminism, and who have supported me in some way.  Each card includes a quote that I have kept close to me for years, by a writer who has influenced me (Adrienne Rich, Marshall Chan/Cat Power, Virginia Woolf, Le Tigre).  Continuing an age-old tradition that references underground texts, words are passed from previous generations to my own.

I used the slow, laborious process of letterpress in order to commit the words to memory while I printed the cards, ‘imprinting’ myself with the words.

The project title, A series of brief, amazing moments, each one making possible the next, is an altered quote by Adrienne Rich.  The tissue paper that gift-wraps each stack of cards includes a quote by Rebecca Solnit.  Solnit writes that women may feel “an invitation to silence”; I want to resist the invitation to stay silent, by celebrating and supporting women’s words.
